Bed Bugs

Bed Bugs are the most commonly found insect in the world and have a close association with human cause nuisance as they feed on sleeping people’s blood. They are brown and don’t have wings. During the day time, hide in bed frames, mattresses, behind wallpaper, headboards, dresser tables, and under every object that is present in the bed surrounding. Bed bug desire to live within 8 feet of where peoples sleep, but they can travel up to 100 feet in one night for searching food. Bed bugs are attracted to the host through body heat and carbon dioxide that expel during exhalation. The peak time of their blood-feeding is between midnight to 5 AM when peoples are in deep sleep. Bed Bug can detect their host at a distance of 3 feet. Bed Bugs usually feed every 3-7 days for 5 minutes on their host and then return to their aggregation site.

Life Cycle

Bud Bugs have three life stages; egg, nymph, and adult. Females can lay 200 to 500 eggs throughout life. On average, after a single blood meal, a female can produce one to seven eggs per day for around 10 days. The bed Bug nymph stage has 5 instars. Each developing stage needs a blood meal to move in the next instar and shed their skin to grow large. Both males and females need a blood meal for reproduction. The life cycle is complete in 37 days at an optimum temperature above 22 degrees centigrade. Depending upon the availability of blood meals, Adults can live for around 1 year.

Sign of Infestation

Bed Bugs are bites usually in a zigzag pattern in the form of a cluster of 3-5 bites on the host. Infestation signs are Eggs, Live Bed bugs, Cast Skin, and Blood or feces stains that are black in color

Hiding places

The most preferred place for hiding in bed surrounding, chairs, between cushions, curtains, wall hanging, electrical boards & appliances, junctions, and drawers. Different types of traps are also used for monitoring the infestation.

Non-Chemical Control

  1. Bed Bugs are controlled through physical means without using insecticide. For eliminating bed bug infestation or as preventive measures exclusion and prevention is a very effective methods.
  2. Don’t bring used items like furniture into the home.
  3. Proper sealing of the house as bed bugs can travel up to 100 feet from an infested place for blood feeding.
  4. Highly infested furniture should be discarded.
  5. Regular inspection and check of luggage items when coming from traveling.
  6. Cleaning is also the best method for decreasing the infestation in pesticidesensitive areas like bed sheets, pillows, blankets, mattresses, curtains, cushions, and clothes.
  7. Vacuuming provides control by removing all stages of bed bugs from crakes & crevices, matters, bed frames, electric boards, carpets, and junctions.
  8. Bed Bugs are very sensitive to heat and can be killed at all stages rapidly over 45 °C. The temperature should rise suddenly otherwise gradually rise in will disappear the Bed Bug.
  9. Steam treatment is also very effective to control all stages of bed bugs without any residual effect. Dry Steam is recommended to apply at high pressure with less than 5% humidity at 94 °C. and the nozzle of the steamer should cover a 30cm distance in 1015 sec

Chemical Treatment

Chemical treatment for bed bugs includes the application of liquid spray, dust application, and aerosol. Bed Bugs are difficult to kill as their legs do not contain sticky pads, so pesticides are not attached to them.
